CNG tanks are dimensioned to withstand a collision. But they will eventually break if the force is large enough. The good thing with CNG is that the fuel is safer than gasoline. If a CNG container burts all the gas will quickly rise up in the sky (lighter than air) while gasoline will leak out on the ground.

CNG gas also require higher temperature to ignite than gasoline. So i would say CNG gas is safer than gasoline..

Regarding your conversion question i guess its hard to answer.. You need to state witch kind of car you have. You say its a gas vehicle? is it LPG then?
Also.. Your LPG vehicle consists of gas that is heavier than air i believe (not sure).. If that tank bursts it will sink to the ground thus making it more dangerous than CNG...
